Herbs and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
By: Brigitte Synesael
116 patients diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) took part in a study to determine the effectiveness of a Chinese herbal formulation as a treatment for this condition. Participants received one of three types of treatments; individualized Chinese herbal treatment, a standard Chinese herbal treatment, or a placebo. This was a randomized, double-blind controlled study. During the course of treatment, the Bowel Symptom Scale was used to monitor changes in condition and measure the severity of the IBS symptoms.
Approximately 20 percent of the United States population suffer from this disorder. Although it is common, there has been no effective treatment available. Recently, with attention directed towards this Chinese herbal formulation, there is significant hope for both pain and symptom management.
The gastroentrologists monitoring the patients found that the group receiving the standard herbal formula improved by 59 percent compared with 19 percent improvement from the placebo group. The individualized Chinese herbs saw an improvement of 40 percent. A high volume of participants taking the herbs reported that they "felt" an improvement in their health and a significant enhancement of their quality of life. The study concluded that although they did not help everyone, Chinese herbal formulations may benefit some patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
