Chiropractors are often asked, "When should children first be
checked for subluxations?" "From before conception
onwards", comes the reply. This answer can initially seem confusing
but there are two logical reasons.
Firstly, an improved health index on the part of the parents before they
conceive naturally extends to a healthier conception and gestation. This
is supported by the number of quality-of-life research articles
presented so far that demonstrate that the removal of subluxation in a
person gives a better performing person.
The second part of the answer revolves around the neurological and
structural function of mum. A recent study, "Perinatal risk factors
for infantile autism" published in Epidemiology 2002 Jul;13
(4):417-23 studies the correlation between infantile autism and
intrauterine growth restriction. Researchers stated that:
"Intrauterine and neonatal factors related to restricted
intrauterine growth ... are important in the pathogenesis (development)
of autism." The large study, conducted by Dr. Christina M. Hultman
of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden examined various maternal
characteristics and pregnancy outcomes among 408 children diagnosed with
infantile autism before 10 years of age and 2040 matched controls.
What this means is that if a woman's pelvis and lumbar spine are not
functioning properly, pressure brought to bear on the developing baby
can further stop them from developing properly. Other research shows
that these distortions also affect the ease and safety of the birth
process for both mother and baby.
Chiropractic care reduces interference to the nerve system. The
resultant increase in vitality leads to more balanced pelvic muscles and
ligaments and removes constraint to the woman's uterus. Once you
understand the relationship between the uterus and the developing baby
the answer to the question, "When should children first be checked
for subluxations?" becomes only natural - From before conception.
