Article: Feng Shui in the Bedroom Creating Sanctuary for Wellbeing and Sensuality - by Melissa Kushi

Is your bedroom a restorative retreat and haven against life’s daily stress? Does it nurture intimacy? Or do you have portraits of grandma on your dresser yet wonder why your sex life suffers? If you maneuver around exercise equipment or stacks of magazines, then it’s time to create personal sanctuary in this high priority room a room meant to serve what I call the Basic Rules of Wellness; the four “R’s” of Rest, Relaxation, Rejuvenation, and Romance. With one-third of our lives spent here, it should nurture the essentials for rejuvenating wellness to body, mind and soul. The key factor lies in the quality of energy absorbed while sleeping, which either nourishes wellbeing or robs us of the vitality required to lead productive, fulfilling lives. Feng Shui, combined with the Basic Rules of Wellness, works deeply during these stationary hours when we are more receptive to the healing cosmic forces. The following guidelines although brief, can transform your bedroom into a sanctuary for wellbeing. The Basic Rules of Wellness Rest Essential as food and exercise, a lack of leads to irritability, dullness, stress, imbalanced hormones, and weight fluctuations. Sound familiar? Turn in early at least 4 nights per week to restore the body’s natural rhythm for physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Practice mindful equanimity; leave your cares at the door. Relaxation Soothe nerves, boost immunity and wash away tension. Regularly schedule downtime to self reflect, day-dream, meditate, read, journal, or take a nap. Sprinkle a few drops of pure essential oil between clean sheets and relax scents like sandalwood, rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, and vetiver are more sensual, while lavender, linden, lemon balm, or chamomile induce relaxation. Rejuvenation Outer beauty is a reflection of internal harmony and good health. Rest, relaxation, diet, and lifestyle are imperative to rejuvenating vitality. A self-care regime of organic whole foods, movement, massage, and deep breathing rebalances the body’s energy systems, while nourishing inner peace and confidence. Replace unfriendly synthetics with natural fibers, allowing the body to breathe, perspire, discharge toxins, and receive vital chi at night. Romance Nurturing healthy passion comes naturally with a more balanced state of being. Practicing the “Four R’s” supports the life skills linked to wellbeing, making you feel more attractive while refining inner wisdom and clarity, important in relationships and partner choices. Devote the bedroom exclusively to the “Four R’s” and give intimacy a place to unfold and linger without distraction. For fun, make a love basket include natural oils, hand towel, water bottle, candles, lighter, incense, and lotions. Creating Sanctuary… Modern amenities are convenient, yet often run counter to our fundamental needs. Follow these guidelines for a lighter, more sensuous space: Electronics/ Home Office: These items wreak havoc on the immune, nervous, and hormonal systems. Put the TV in a closed cabinet and move the office, business preoccupation, and stress to another room. Water/Mirrors: Can undermine stability, harmonious relationships, and good health. Nix the water, and if you can see yourself from the bed, move or cover mirror at night. Family Photos/ Religious Icons: In what may be the last bastion of privacy where we can freely express love and intimacy, uninvited eyes bring unconscious inhibitions. Bathrooms: Locate bed away from bathroom door (closed), never place headboard on wall abutting a toilet. Clutter: Keep chaos at bay; tackle nonessentials and create a system that works for you. Poison Arrows Counter sharp corners or protruding angles with floor lamps, plants, artwork, or room divider to minimize. Beams/Sloping Ceilings: Counter oppressive chi with a canopy of natural fibers over the full dimension of the bed. Designer Directions? Soothing ambiance and décor are important, however true Feng Shui goes profoundly beyond decorating. One authentic Chinese system, Ba Zhai or Eight Mansions Feng Shui uses your date of birth to determine auspicious compass directions to tap healing celestial forces. If you suffer from health, romance or money issues, use the simplified chart to calculate your Kua Number, find your best directions, and move your bed. Harness these forces to enhance health, wellbeing, prosperity, harmonious relationships, and personal growth. Calculate Your Number The Chinese solar calendar cut off date is February 4th. If you are born before that, say on January 11, 1985, use 1984, and calculate as follows: Add last two digits of birth year until you get single digit, i.e.: 1984: 8 + 4 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3Unlike Nine Star Ki, (an offshoot of this system), there are separate gender calculations (regardless of sexual preference). Please note that when arriving at Kua 5: 5 transforms to Kua 2 for males and Kua 8 for females. MALE: take 10 and minus your single digit: i.e., 10 - 3 = Kua 7 FEMALE: Add 5 to the single digit: i.e., 3 + 5 = Kua 8 EAST & WEST GROUP NUMBERS EAST GROUP NUMBERS: 1, 3, 4, 9. BEST DIRECTIONS: North, South, East, Southeast. WEST GROUP NUMBERS: 2, 6, 7, 8. BEST DIRECTIONS: Northeast, Southwest, Northwest, West. Bed Location Solid walls without doors or windows are preferred, however this is not always possible as best directions take priority. If you find it necessary to angle the bed, use a folding screen to create support behind the headboard. Use a compass to measure the incoming chi for instance, face a good direction while sitting at your desk, but for sleeping the position of the bed is based upon where your head points when you are lying down! Honor yourself and let the Basic Rules of Wellness become your mantra in the bedroom while enhancing all areas of life.
