Article: DOING AND BEING - THE ART OF CREATING BALANCE - by Christopher and Jeannine Marie Jelm

For most of us, "doing" comes quite easily and, regrettably, it often takes on a bit of an automatic quality, as we tend to get caught up in our day-to-day activities! We seem to fill our lives with activity...somehow making ourselves feel more productive or allowing ourselves to think that we can hold it all together by just "doing" a little bit more. We don't seem to have time for just "being." Many of us don't even know how to just "be"...and often we feel guilty when we are able to take some "just being time" away from our busy schedules! Our ongoing tug-of-war between doing and being can pull us out of balance just as Spirit is stimulating us to move to higher and higher levels of balance in all areas of our lives. Perhaps some new perspectives on "doing" and "being" can be useful during these changing and challenging times!

As we each move along our spiritual path, many of us tend to view "being" as a very special experience or condition in life, whereas "doing" may seem a little ordinary! In fact, most of us generally feel that...."If I could just "do" less and "be" more, then I will indeed tap into the divine flow of life." It's time for us to let go of our limiting beliefs and open to the possibility that doing and being, each in its own way, are both very special and very ordinary. You may discover that balance is the key here....just like in so many other areas of spiritual development....and that finding the proper balance in your life regarding doing and being will stimulate the "divine flow" that you seek!

If you have seen the movie Little Buddha, you may remember the progression of experience that was depicted. Played by Keanu Reeves, the young Buddha shifted from his searching mode (doing) into his austere, ascetic mode (just being) only to eventually discover the "middle way" of balance. This wisdom has been the foundation for Buddhic philosophy for many centuries. A sense of this balance naturally comes from the realization that being and doing must always exist simultaneously with each other, to one degree or another, in order for life to be experienced at all! It is unavoidable. When you are "just being" you are simply doing "being." And when you are "just doing" you are simply "being the doer" of the experience you are creating! The well-known Yin-Yang symbol reflects this wisdom by having a dot of black in the white swirl and a dot of white in the black swirl. Each of these two aspects of life experience is always imbedded in the other.

So, if it is simply about staying in balance with this, what can one do? The answer is basically about holding being and doing in their proper relationship with each other in your life...allowing each to have its proper place! The measure of your effectiveness in maintaining each in its proper place can be viewed in many ways. You could examine your life...try to be a little objective here...regarding your level of joy, your sense of relationship with your Higher Self, the way you interact with the clerk at the grocery store, how effectively and productively you function at work or perhaps how loving and tender you can be with your intimate other. You pick the way to measure, but be honest and objective with yourself!

So many of us get caught up in striving for the spiritual perfection that we think "being" represents and we miss the ecstasy of just "doing" the simplest things in our day-to-day experience. On the other hand, many of us get caught up in the day-to-day striving that we create within life, call it workaholism, and we miss the ecstasy of just "being."

As we all move along spiritually during these extraordinary times of the personal and planetary transformation, one of our most exciting challenges seems to be about dancing with the principle of balance regarding "doing and being"! We encourage you stay with this dance of balance....all with great joy...all for highest purpose...in order to discover the "divine flow" in life that we are all here to manifest!
