| Article: Winter In Us - by Lance David Isakov | ||
|
The Winter is a deep and powerful time of year. It is a time when the
seeds, being kept warm underneath the earth, are allowed to store their
power and build their reserves for the upcoming Spring. In nature the
woods are still and quiet and the water is frozen. Many animals are
hibernating and birds have flown to warmer climates. The leaves have
fallen off of the trees and the Qi, the life force, has withdrawn inward
and down into the roots. The Winter is a time of building the
reservoirs, of storing the essence. It is a time of rest and
rejuvenation. In Traditional Acupuncture we understand that we are part of nature. That, just as there is a winter ‘out there’, there is a winter inside of us. There is a time for us to go within. A time to be still, a time to rest and rejuvenate just like the trees. This is a time of deep power, of deep wisdom. When we allow this aspect of us to flourish, we will hold a mighty power that, in the springtime, will explode through us. It is known that the coldest winters bring the most amazing, colorful and vibrant flowers in the Spring. Pause for a moment and reflect upon the depth of last year’s Winter and the strength of the following Spring. So how does Winter show up in people? In our body, the Kidneys store the essence and power. The Kidneys are known as the ‘pilot lights’ that ignite our drive, our will. Our essence is like our potential, the possibility of creation that we hold. When out of balance physical symptoms may show up as lack of energy, lack of drive, lack of will, back pain, Urinary problems, sleep disorders, hearing difficulties, hair loss, sexual disorders and others. In our Mind/Spirit the Winter may shows up as an underlying desire to understand the meaning and mystery of our world. To accomplish this we may enjoy retreating to a quiet and still place. We may be interested in the arts, religion and philosophy. The Winter can reveal itself when we stick to our course, when we easily flow around obstacles, when we are fearless and persistent like the flow of a greater mountain stream (the name of a point on our body relating to the Winter energy). If the Winter within us is not balanced, we may find mind/spirit symptoms such as irritability, insecurity, depression, lack of motivation, loss of will, gloominess, or excess fear (a question like ’will I survive the winter, will this ever end?). A goal of Traditional Acupuncture is to bring the Winter energy (along with the energy of the other seasons) into balance. There is an understanding that our symptoms are a signal of this underlying imbalance and when we do bring the seasons into harmony, through treatment or lifestyle changes, our symptoms fade away. |
