Article: Manual Lymph Therapy can help you heal faster after Plastic Surgery - by Suzanne Humen, OTR-CLT and Pamela Cohen, RPT-CLT

Thousands of people every year decide to get some form of plastic surgery. Swelling is the body's natural response to surgery. The management of swelling will determine the severity of one's scars, bruises and pain.

WHAT IS MANUAL LYMPH THERAPY?
Manual Lymph Therapy is a very delicate skin massage treatment consisting of specialized techniques which are utilized to increase lymph flow.

WHO WILL BE PERFORMING MY TREATMENT?
A therapist (a Physical, Occupational or Massage Therapist) must be certified in at least 135-160 hours of European training to effectively provide this treatment technique.

HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM MANUAL LYMPH THERAPY?
Manual Lymph Therapy will increase your body's rate of healing. Blood flows through your body bringing nutrients to and wastes from your tissues. The distance between the tissues and the blood determines how easily the tissues get the oxygen they need to heal. The closer the are to each other, the better. Swelling increases the distance that nutrients have to flow to the tissues, making healing more difficult. Manual Lymph Therapy decreases swelling by improving lymph flow throughout the body.

WHAT IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?
The Lymphatic System is part of the circulatory system of veins and arteries. The important role of the Lymphatic System is to remove impurities from the body's tissues and blood.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START MANUAL LYMPH THERAPY?
The first treatment session should begin within one week of the planned surgery. Ideally, 3 treatment sessions are recommended before surgery to clear out the waste products from the Lymphatic vessels to create a healthier Lymphatic system. The subsequent treatment can start as early as the day after surgery.

HOW MANY TREATMENT SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Everybody is different. Your treatment length will be dependent on the type and extent of the procedure. Generally, we recommend at least 3 treatment before surgery and 8 treatments after surgery. The final treatment includes instruction in self massage and a customized home program.

DOES MANUAL LYMPH THERAPY HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?
NO!
Manual Lymph Therapy is a non-invasive technique that has no adverse side effects and requires no medication. You can expect reduced swelling, relief of pain, decreased bruising, and overall increased rate of healing.
