| Article: Exploding Herpes Infection Rate Managed with Natural Products - by Richard C. Honour, PhD | ||

Herpes – The disease Herpes is an infection caused by Herpes Simplex
Virus (HSV). Once infected, you have Herpes for life. Outbreaks of HSV
may appear multiple times per year or after dormant periods of up to
several years. HSV may be spread by any contact, and has nearly equal
prevalence in men and women. Herpes Types - There are two common types of HSV, either of which may cause oral herpes or genital herpes. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV 1) generally causes fever blisters or cold sores of the mouth, and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV 2) usually causes genital herpes. HSV 1 and HSV 2 both may cause sores in and around the mouth, vagina, penis and anus, or on the buttocks or thighs. Herpes Demographics - In the US alone, HSV 1 infects about 250 million people and HSV 2 about 50 million, and both are increasing rapidly. Herpes is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the world. Perhaps 90 percent of all people with Herpes had their initial HSV-1 infection by age ten. There are perhaps 500,000 new cases of HSV 2 reported in the US each year. In the most serious cases, HSV 2 can cause spinal problems and brain swelling. Nearly half of all young women could suffer from HSV 2 within the next 20 years if nothing is done to slow the rapid spread, and young men will likely suffer the same fate. About 39 percent of all males and 49 percent of all females aged 15 to 39 could have genital herpes by 2025. Herpes can be especially risky for women who have active Herpes during pregnancy, in that they can pass it to the baby during delivery, which can cause blindness and other defects. Herpes Biology – Herpes is a chronic, recurring disease, and recurrences can be triggered by sunlight, stress, fatigue, excessive alcohol or caffeine use, trauma and certain foods. A person with symptoms of Herpes, such as oral or genital sores or blisters, should see a physician. Herpes can spread even if there are no symptoms, or by people who are unknowingly infected. An extreme flareup or breakout of Herpes in anyone, or an infection in the case of pregnancy, should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately. Sexually active people can prevent getting the disease by wearing condoms or insisting on their use and by avoiding sex with people who have active lesions. People with Herpes should avoid sex during outbreaks to prevent spreading the infection. Herpes Treatment Options - There is no cure for Herpes, but a physician may prescribe an approved pharmaceutical to treat the symptoms and lessen the outbreaks, thus helping to control spread of the infection. Less toxic and less costly natural products are available that are intended to support the immune system, provide some antiviral activity and aid in the healing process. These natural products may be among the best ways to manage the disease on a long-term basis. Formulations of essential oils from medicinal plants have been shown to have effect against Herpes, especially if applied early in the initial outbreak stage and then regularly until signs and symptoms subside. Essential Oils for Herpes - Products that are formulations of active antiviral essential oils, such as the Eulara product Herpes (www.eulara.com), are known to have strong antiviral activity. They can be effective in managing a Herpes outbreak if applied early, liberally and directly to the affected area. Applying the oils several times daily, beginning immediately at the first signs of tingling and itching, should result in fewer symptoms and a delay in the time to recurrence. Antiviral essential oil formulations should also promote faster healing time, reduce outbreaks induced by sunlight and reduce the size of cold sores. Natural essential oils used in topical-use-only antiviral formulations generally have no side effects, as long as they are not ingested, administered systemically or applied directly to the eyes or to sensitive mucous membranes.
