Article: Using Herbal Ear Candles Makes Sense - by Stewart Feldman

Ear candling has been a home remedy practiced for centuries all over the world. Ancient Egyptians used “ear cones” in which herbs were burned and the smoke blown into the ear. Native Americans also burned herbs in a “smudge cone” for smoke to soothe the ear.

The process is simple. The tapered end of the hollow “candle” is placed at the opening of the ear and the opposite end is lit, allowing smoke to flow into the ear. This warm smoke can soothe the ear and may help relieve pain, discomfort and itching. A typical candling session uses two to four candles per ear. It feels very relaxing, often conveying a sense of “clarity” afterwards.

Designed with a comfortable tip and spiral wrap to direct the smoke, ear candles are usually made from 100% unbleached cotton or linen containing paraffin or beeswax. Herbal candles contain healpful herbal essential oils such as Echinacea, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oil. These herbs can improve enjoyment of the candling process and may add healing benefits.

People use ear candling to help dry out fluids in the ear canal and soften old hardened earwax. Candling may help the body’s natural excretion of this sticky substance, which can contain a variety of waste material including remains of infections and environmental pollution, dead cells, pollen, molds and parasites.

Many people have their ears candled at the change of seasons, especially during cold weather when they are confined indoors and exposed to colds, flu, and other illness. Swollen membranes, mucus and infections can cause pain in the ears and affect hearing. Earwax usually protects the ear canal and keep it clean, but it can accumulate and harden, affecting hearing and leading to further complications.

For countless generations, people have enjoyed ear candling and reported positive results from this traditional procedure!
