Article: Zdorovye - Slavic Natural Health System - by Benjamin Brackbill

  Zdorovye (zdah-ROWV-yeah)

Zdorovye™ is a natural health system; meaning its primary goal is to keep the body agile, strong and functional. It does this through an infinite amount of exercises that seek to fully integrate movement (Dvizheniye), posture/position (Polozheniye) and breathing (Dykhaniye).

Zdorovye™ comes from the folk traditions of the Russian and Cossack peoples. For centuries these people have had strong traditions of folk dance self-preservation. These are the two areas of their cultures that Zdorovye™ originates.

Folk Dance
Many people have seen Russian and Cossack style folk dancing. They are both visually high flying and acrobatic. When done properly, under the supervision of a qualified folk dance instructor, these high flying acrobatic dances are quite easy- requiring very little effort as one might think. This tradition of movement was combined with the self-preservation system to create a natural health system that keeps the body agile, strong and functional.

Self-Preservation
Russia is the great expanse of land that separates the East from the West. Russia has been under attack since recorded history; the Germans from the west, the Greeks from the south, the Turks from the south and the Chinese from the east. When one culture is under constant attack there is no wonder they developed their own system of martial art.

Russian Martial Art R.O.S.S. (Rossijskaya Otechestvennaya Sistema Samozashchite - Russian Native System of Self-Defense) is the collective wisdom of the Russian peoples on how to protect one's self from an enemy on any terrain: grass, mud, concrete or a frozen river (ice). This gives the practitioner the ability to navigate any type of ground in an efficient manner. (For more information: http://www.AmerROSS.com)

The task of developing Zdorovye™ for Americans was given to Scott Sonnon, the first American to train in Russian Martial Art R.O.S.S. Scott, along with the American Senior Health Researcher for Zdorovye™ Benjamin Brackbill, have developed Zdorovye so people can learn the system and improve their health in an efficient manner.

Zdorovye™ is a movement education system as well as being a natural health system. Any person who studies Zdorovye™ will not only improve his/her health but will also increase his/her kinesthetic awareness, balance and knowledge of his/her body in three-dimensions.

Zdorovye™ comprises of three phases of study: Movement (Dvizheniye), Posture/Position (Polozheniye) and Breathing (Dykhaniye). Each exercise in the Zdorovye™ Health System integrates all three of these phases. You cannot have one without the other two.

The novice-level educational system of Zdorovye™ consists of three phases:
1. Recovery
2. Coordination
3. Refinement
The student first learns how to recover the youthfulness of her/his body: the agility, stamina and posture that we have been slowly loosing since puberty.

Once these aspects of her/his health have been recovered, they are coordinated. One of the aspects of the coordination is the recruitment of joints - recruiting more and more joints for each activity: getting farther and farther away from the concept of isolation (fitness industry).

The next step is to refine these activities. This involves smoothing out the neural pathways so that her/his movements become smooth and flowing rather than choppy. Refinement also involves refining the integration of breathing, posture/position and movement.

Zdorovye™ creates new alternatives from old traditions. From the frozen land of Russia to the heartland of America and to each and every person in the world, Zdorovye™ seeks to improve health and keep our bodies and minds agile, strong and functional.
