It goes without saying that the pressures of modern living
exert themselves on our bodies. We feel tired in the morning because that
irritating alarm clock is telling us to get up and go to work. We may feel
stressed because of financial burdens or family issues. We put on weight because
we don't find enough time to exercise. However, it is seldom realised that the
body often has its own ability for dealing with the everyday pressures to which
it is frequently subjected without the need for external remedies such as pills
and medicine.
One of the simplest ways to ensure that your body is able to carry out its
functions efficiently and effectively is simply to drink more water. Given that
the brain is mostly water (some estimates say as much as 9/10ths), it is natural
that it should begin to shut down and conserve its resources if it is deprived -
hence a feeling of tiredness and lack of concentration. Yet our usual reaction
is to turn on the coffee machine. This is inspite of the fact that coffee is a
diuretic, which exasperates the problem of dehydration. Simply replenishing your
body's stock of water can greatly improve your ability to think and concentrate
for extended periods of time, such as at work.
This may even be the case if you haven't had a particularly good night's sleep.
Although most people contest that they do not get enough sleep, on average you
are more than likely to be getting all of the sleep that you need. Ensuring that
you have a regular intake of water can not only help you get through a hard day,
but will also make it more enjoyable and productive as you take your eye off the
clock and concentrate on what you are doing.
Further, water allows the digestive system to work more efficiently so that
calories you've swallowed at your last meal are broken down and nutrients are
absorbed more effectively, meaning that less of your food intake is likely to be
stored as fat. Moreover, both dehydration and tiredness are routinely mistaken
for hunger (or at least the feeling of "wanting" rather than "needing" to eat) -
thus further exasperating the body by using up even more of your precious water
intake so that you feel even more tired and irritable, unable to escape the
vicious circle.
Find out Now if you are Drinking Enough
The most straightforward way in which to determine whether you have an adequate
intake of water is to look at the colour of your urine. The lighter and more
watery it is, then the more likely you are to be well hydrated. You will also be
needing to visit the restroom a little more often. The darker it is, the less
water you have. Be careful, however, as diuretics such as alcohol and caffeine
will also cause your urine to be less colored, but this is down to the fact that
they unnaturally drain the body's water, leading to the dehydration you are
trying to avoid.
This is not to imply that all ills are remedied immediately and effectively by
drinking water. You should still also watch your diet and exercise as well as
your sleeping pattern. But it should not be underestimated that the body has its
own natural ability to sustain itself provided that you give it the right
ingredients - and water is undoubtedly the most important of them.
