Feeling anxious and on-guard all of the time can lead one
to look for any relief in sight.
When anxiety reaches unbearable proportions, we need answers and tools to help
us understand the role anxiety plays in our lives, and tools to reduce that
anxiety. We frequently seek that relief in medication prescribed by a physician
to help reduce the anxiety. That will undoubtedly have some effect as medicine
can be a powerful and effective remedy. However medicine cannot help you
understand the roots of the anxiety or give you tools to use throught out your
life to put you back in charge of your feelings. Another option available to you
is to engage in Cognitive Therapy with a qualified, licensed counselor.
Cognitive Therapy will help you determine the roots of your anxiety, clearly see
that certain situations trigger ineffective, unnecessary beliefs that lead to
your anxiety, and give you tools to use against the anxiety you have lived with
for so long.
Consider this when you start to feel anxious:
A. What event/situation just happened?
(My boss was critical of my work)
B. What internal/core belief did it trigger
in me? (I must be perfect or I'm a loser)
C. What do you feel? (ANXIOUS!)
D. How do you express that anxiety?
(I do not accept anything less than
perfect in myself or my children, spouse,
others, making me quite judgemental) You can see how that type of thinking could
lead to your anxiety as well as conflict at home and with others.
Let's look at the roots of your anxiety and put you back in charge of your core
beliefs and resulting feelings.
