| Article: Acupressure & trigger point therapy - by Karri Koivula | ||
|
Many people mix acupressure and trigger point therapy together. This is quite natural, because when practiced they can look exactly alike. They also share many similarities even beyond the looks. Trigger point therapy has its roots in western medicine and physical entities called myofascial trigger points, while acupressure bases on energy meridians which at this moment cannot be demonstrated as physical phenomenons. In trigger point therapy you choose the places to aply pressure by finding pressure tender spots, this is something that some practitioners of acupressure may also do, and some ancient acupuncture manuals promote this method of finding spots for acupressure. In these situations trigger point therapy and acupressure are basically the same thing. To make things even more confusing, it’s common for meridians based acupressure points and common trigger point spots to overlap --another situation when these both methods are almost the same. The biggest difference is that trigger point therapy is used only to relieve localized muscular pain and dysfunction, while acupressure is sometimes used to treat different conditions and diseases. |
