  Article: Getting an abundant, consistent clean, healthy crystal clear, water supply from your well is not impossible - by Gary Cerantola, Hon. B.Sc., P.Eng., MBA  
     
 

A successful home water system drawing from a well has two main features. It supplies ample water at constant pressure and provides adequate capacity to water treatment equipment which is the key to long term peak water treatment system performance. Long term peak performance of your water treatment system assures the water you drink is always safe and healthy for as long as you draw from the water source. 

Too many water treatment systems have been installed in households that worked great for up to 6 months only to find they were rendered virtually useless. The reason for the decrease in water treatment performance stems mainly from an inadequate supply of backwash water from most low yield water wells equipped with a 5 gpm or lower 20 psig differential pressure water supply system. 

As the requirement for well water treatment extends beyond treating for water hardness the use of media filtration invariably comes into play. The critical requirement for the effective operation of filter media units is in the backwash step. The units must be backwashed at the proper rate and pressure in order to achieve proper cleansing and even redistribution of filter media in the filter tank.

During backwashing with water, the filter bed must be fluidized and allowed to expand sufficiently to promote adequate scrubbing of the media grains against each other so trapped particles attached to the media are released. Too little filter media bed expansion will leave the bed with retained particles and this will tend to shorten filter runs, unevenly re-distribute the filter media and limit the media grains surface area exposure to assist in the oxidation of elements and gases in your well water such as Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulfide. The result is poor water treatment equipment performance and an increased risk of bed fouling from bacteria growth.

The solution is to plan your water treatment system around the use of a constant pressure water supply system. With plug and play packaging and improved technology today, a constant pressure system is a lot more economical than what people think, especially if the investment is compared against the cost of increasing the well capacity. 

You can plan on water storage capacity for your constant pressure system of approximately 100 gallons per person in your household which is based on an average usage rate per person per day in newer built homes with larger tubs and higher capacity fixtures. A 350 gallon packaged constant pressure system can deliver up to 15 gpm at 55 psig pressure constantly for at least 20 minutes while the well pump kicks in to replenish the storage. (Automatic washers, shower heads and bathtubs consume about 5 gpm each)


You not only will get fresh smelling, clean, healthy water, you will never have to worry about someone flushing the toilet or turning on the dishwasher while you are in the shower leaving you to finish up your wash by chasing the remaining amount of water swirling around in your shower enclosure.
